Gates of Olympus: the short verdict
Gates of Olympus earns its place as the reference tumble slot: clear rules, multipliers that can land on any spin and a free spins round that keeps a running total. The 5,000x cap is modest next to its sequels, and a Medium label still means long gaps between bonuses. Play it if you want the original formula at its simplest; pick the 1000 or Super Scatter version only if you want a higher ceiling and accept more variance.

The Gates of Olympus slot is Pragmatic Play's tumble game from February 2021: a 6x5 grid where 8 or more matching symbols pay wherever they land, and multiplier symbols worth 2x to 500x can drop on any spin. It became the template for a whole family of sequels, three of which are also in our catalog.
This page explains how the original actually plays: how tumbles chain together, how the multipliers are added up, what triggers the 15 free spins, and what the 96.50% RTP and 5,000x max win mean in Canadian dollars. The free demo above runs on play money with the same maths as the real game, so you can check every rule described here before deciding whether the game is for you.
How the Gates of Olympus slot pays
Forget paylines. A spin drops 30 symbols onto a board of six columns and five rows, and the game simply counts how many of each symbol sit on the screen. Eight or more of the same symbol anywhere on the grid is a win. Pays come in three tiers: 8-9 symbols, 10-11 symbols, and 12 or more.
Tumbles keep a spin going
Whenever something pays, those symbols are cleared and replacements drop in from above. If the new layout forms another win, it pays and tumbles again. This repeats until a drop produces nothing new, so one paid spin can contain several wins in a row. The game treats the whole chain as a single tumble sequence, and that detail matters for the multipliers described in the next section.
The symbol ladder
The premium set is four objects: crown, hourglass, ring and chalice. Below them sit five gems in red, purple, yellow, green and blue. Crowns sit at the top of the ladder: 10x the total bet for 8-9, 25x for 10-11 and 50x for 12 or more. At the bottom, 8-9 blue gems return a quarter of the bet. Reaching the top tier means 12 matching symbols on a 30-position grid, which is 40% of the screen, so it is the rare outcome rather than the usual one.
- 8-9 crowns at a C$1 bet: C$10
- 12 or more crowns at C$1: C$50
- 8-9 chalices at C$1: C$1.50
- 8-9 blue gems at C$1: C$0.25
Multiplier symbols: 2x to 500x on any spin
The multiplier symbols are not reserved for the bonus: they can drop on any spin or tumble of the base game too. Each one shows a random value between 2x and 500x and pays nothing by itself. Once the last tumble of a sequence has settled, the game sums every multiplier showing and applies that sum to everything the sequence won.
The word "added" is the key. A 5x and a 10x make 15x, not 50x. A worked example at a C$2 bet:
- The first drop pays 10-11 rings: 5x the bet, so C$10.
- The tumble brings in 8 red gems: 1x the bet, C$2. The sequence now totals C$12.
- A 5x and a 10x multiplier are on the grid when the sequence ends: 15x in total.
- The sequence pays C$12 x 15 = C$180.
If the sequence contains no win, the multipliers on screen pay nothing at all. The big results in this game need two things at the same moment: a winning tumble sequence and one or more multipliers landing during it. That is also why two spins that look alike on the grid can end with very different payouts.
Free spins and the running total multiplier
Four or more Zeus scatters anywhere on the grid trigger 15 free spins. The scatters also pay on the spin that triggers the round: 3x the bet for four, 5x for five and 100x for six or more. At a C$1 bet, six scatters are worth C$100 before a single free spin has been played.
Inside the round, the grid, the tumbles and the paytable are unchanged. What changes is how multipliers behave. Each multiplier that arrives on a paying spin goes into a running total, and that total does not reset between spins - it only grows until the round is over. Collect several early and even ordinary gem wins later in the round get lifted; collect none and the bonus plays out much like 15 base-game spins.
The round at a glance
- Trigger: 4 or more scatters, 15 free spins
- Scatter pay on the trigger spin: 3x, 5x or 100x for 4, 5 or 6+ scatters
- Extra spins: 3 or more scatters in the round give +5
- Multipliers: 2x-500x, added to the running total when they land on a winning spin
Extending the round needs only three scatters, one fewer than the trigger itself, so a round can run beyond its first 15 spins more often than the base-game trigger rate would suggest.
RTP, volatility and max win in Canadian dollars
Pragmatic Play publishes an RTP of 96.50% for Gates of Olympus, and the same 96.50% for both the Ante Bet and Buy Free Spins modes. RTP is a long-run average across a very large number of spins: spread over that many spins, each C$100 staked comes back as roughly C$96.50, and C$3.50 is the house's share. One evening's result can sit far from that average. Casinos can also run lower RTP builds of the same game, so check the figure in the game's information screen where you play. Our RTP and volatility guide explains both numbers in more depth.
Volatility
The current in-game rules label the volatility Medium on Pragmatic's three-step scale of Low, Medium and High. You may see it rated higher elsewhere, usually on an older five-point scale; we use the game's own label. Medium here still means uneven results, because a large share of the return sits in multiplier sequences and free spins rather than in regular tumbles.
What 5,000x looks like at Canadian stakes
The max win is 5,000x the stake. The demo runs from C$0.20 to C$240 a spin on the base bet, or up to C$300 with the Ante Bet; real-money limits are set by each casino.
| Base bet | With Ante Bet (1.25x) | Buy Free Spins (100x) | Max win (5,000x) |
|---|---|---|---|
| C$0.20 | C$0.25 | C$20 | C$1,000 |
| C$0.50 | C$0.63 | C$50 | C$2,500 |
| C$1 | C$1.25 | C$100 | C$5,000 |
| C$2 | C$2.50 | C$200 | C$10,000 |
| C$5 | C$6.25 | C$500 | C$25,000 |
Treat the max win as a ceiling, not a target. It needs a free spins round with a very large running total, and the overwhelming majority of sessions end far below it.
Gates of Olympus™ slot machine free: how the demo works
The demo above loads with a play-money balance shown in C$. There is no sign-up and nothing to deposit, and the game inside the frame is the provider's own build, so the grid, the paytable, the multipliers and the free spins behave exactly as they do with real money. It is the simplest way to play Gates of Olympus free and get a feel for how often tumbles chain, how multipliers arrive and how long the free spins can take to show up.
What the demo can and cannot tell you
- It shows the rules, the pace and what Medium volatility feels like spin to spin.
- It cannot predict anything. Every spin is independent, so a hot or cold run in the demo says nothing about your next real-money spin.
- Play money changes behaviour. Stakes that feel trivial with a demo balance feel different with your own C$, so set real limits before you switch.
- Depending on the region the demo loads in, the Buy Free Spins button can be hidden, because some regulated markets switch the buy off.
To compare two versions side by side, the demo pages for Gates of Olympus 1000 and Gates of Olympus Super Scatter work the same way.

Ante Bet or Buy Free Spins?
Two optional modes change what it costs to reach the bonus. They cannot be combined: switching the Ante Bet on disables the buy.
Ante Bet
The Ante Bet raises the bet multiplier from 20x to 25x, so every spin costs 1.25x your base stake. In return, the natural chance of landing free spins doubles. At a C$1 base bet you pay C$1.25 a spin; over 200 spins that is C$250 wagered instead of C$200. The published RTP stays at 96.50%, so the extra C$50 buys more frequent bonuses, not a better long-run return.
Buy Free Spins
For 100x your bet you skip straight to the bonus, and the trigger spin always shows four scatters. At C$1 that is C$100 for one round. Four scatters pay 3x, so C$3 comes back on the trigger; the rest depends on what the 15 spins collect. Bought rounds that pay back only a fraction of the C$100 are common, and a few of them in a row can wipe out a session budget.
- Normal play: C$1 a spin, standard bonus chance, buy available
- Ante Bet: C$1.25 a spin, twice the natural bonus chance, no buy
- Buy Free Spins: C$100 a round, instant bonus, same 96.50% RTP
How the original compares with its sequels
Pragmatic has built a series on this grid, and three of the sequels are in our catalog. The differences sit mostly in the multiplier range, the volatility label and the ceiling.
| Game | Released | Volatility | Multipliers | Max win | RTP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gates of Olympus | Feb 2021 | Medium | 2x-500x | 5,000x | 96.50% |
| Gates of Olympus 1000 | Dec 2023 | High | 2x-1,000x | 15,000x | 96.50% |
| Gates of Olympus Super Scatter | Apr 2025 | Medium | 2x-500x plus Super Scatters | 50,000x | 96.50% |
| Gates of Olympus 2500 | Sep 2026 | High | 2x-2,500x | 25,000x | 96.52% |
Gates of Olympus 1000 keeps the rules but doubles the multiplier ceiling and moves to High volatility. Super Scatter keeps the Medium label and adds special scatters worth up to 50,000x the base bet. Gates of Olympus 2500 adds a wheel that picks one of four free spins types, plus three ante levels and Super Spins. The original remains the plainest of the four: one ante option, one buy, one free spins type.
Outside the series, Starlight Princess 1000 uses the same 6x5 pay-anywhere grid with a different theme and a High label, and Fortune of Olympus moves the Greek theme onto a 7x7 cluster grid. The full list is in our slot catalog.
Who should play Gates of Olympus, and how to size your stake
The game suits players who like a short rule set and don't mind waiting for the feature. Every spin can bring a multiplier, so the base game has its own upside, but the larger payouts concentrate in the free spins. If you prefer frequent small wins, the Low-rated Sweet Bonanza is the gentler option on the same type of grid.
A practical bankroll approach
- Choose the session budget first, then the stake. A C$100 budget at C$1 a spin is 100 spins; at C$0.50 it is 200, which gives the free spins twice as many chances to appear.
- Pick a loss limit and a time limit up front, and end the session the moment either is hit.
- Keep bonus buys in a separate, smaller budget. At C$0.20 a buy costs C$20; at C$1 it costs C$100.
- Don't raise the stake to win back losses. No staking pattern changes the 96.50% RTP or the house edge.
Slots are entertainment with a built-in house edge, and Gates of Olympus is no exception. If a session stops being fun, end it there.
Is Gates of Olympus fair, and can you play it in Canada?
Every spin is random, and the demo and the real-money game run the same maths with the same published RTP. Losing runs are normal for a game that keeps much of its value in multipliers and free spins; they are not a sign that something is wrong. What does vary is the casino: the RTP build it runs, its licence and the tools it gives you to control your play.
Ontario has an open, regulated market for private sites, run through iGaming Ontario, and Alberta opened its own on 13 July 2026 under AGLC. Every other province writes its own rules. Online gambling is 19+ in most provinces and 18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. Before you play Gates of Olympus for real money, check that the site is licensed for your province, that the game shows the 96.50% build or tells you which one it runs, and that deposit and loss limits are available. Our guide to playing in Canada covers the provincial differences.

What works and what does not
Pros
- Multipliers of 2x-500x can land on any spin, so the base game has its own upside
- Short rule set: one free spins type, one ante option, one buy
- Published 96.50% RTP holds in the Ante Bet and Buy Free Spins modes too
- Free demo with a C$ play-money balance and the same maths as the real game
- C$0.20 minimum stake in the demo suits small budgets
Cons
- 5,000x max win is the lowest in the series; the sequels reach 15,000x to 50,000x
- Multipliers pay nothing on a sequence without a win
- Free spins can take a long time to arrive, and a bought round can return less than its 100x price
- Casinos can run lower RTP builds, so the 96.50% has to be checked at each site
How the feature works
Four or more Zeus scatters anywhere on the grid trigger 15 free spins and pay 3x, 5x or 100x the bet for four, five or six-plus scatters. During the round, any multiplier symbol (2x to 500x) that lands on a winning spin is added to a running total multiplier that keeps building until the round ends. Landing three or more scatters inside the round extends it by five spins. The bonus is also for sale for 100x the bet, or the Ante Bet (1.25x stake) doubles the natural trigger chance.
