Legacy of Dead: the short verdict
Legacy of Dead takes the classic expanding-symbol formula and gives it a sharper hook: each retrigger adds another expanding symbol, up to nine. The provider's help page lists a 96.58% RTP and the ceiling is 5,000x the stake. The base game is plain and most of the value sits in the free spins, so expect quiet stretches. If you already like this style of Egyptian slot, it is one of the better-paying versions to try in the demo first.

Legacy of Dead free spins are the reason this Play'n GO slot exists: 8 spins with a special expanding symbol, plus another expanding symbol every time you retrigger. Released in January 2020, it sits on a traditional 5x3 grid with 10 paylines and an Egyptian tomb theme.
The structure will look familiar if you have played older book-style games, but the details differ enough to matter, from the number of spins to how retriggers stack. Below we cover how the paylines and coin bets work, what the Tomb does, why an expanding symbol can fill the screen, what the 96.58% RTP and 5,000x cap mean in dollars, and how the free demo compares with real-money play in Canada.
How Legacy of Dead slots work: lines, coins and the base game
Most Legacy of Dead slots sessions are spent in the base game, so it helps to understand the bet settings first. The game uses 5 reels and 3 rows with 10 paylines, which you can reduce to as few as one, and wins pay left to right on active lines.
Building your bet
Your total bet is lines x coins per line x coin value. In the demo that ranges from 0.01 (1 line, 1 coin, 0.01 coin value) to 100 (10 lines, 5 coins, 2.00 coin value). With all 10 lines active, the smallest spin is 0.10. The demo uses its own play currency, and real-money limits are set by each casino.
- Play all 10 lines. Fewer lines lower the spin cost but leave winning combinations unpaid, and the expanding symbol in free spins only pays on active lines.
- Adjust coin value or coins per line to change the stake instead.
- Pays are per line bet. The paytable lists symbol values as multiples of the line bet, while the Tomb's scatter pays use the total bet.
The symbol ladder
Four character symbols sit at the top: the blue pharaoh, Anubis, the gold pharaoh and Horus. A five-symbol line of the blue pharaoh returns 5,000x the line bet. Below them come the card ranks A, K, Q, J and 10, which need three of a kind to pay, while the character symbols already pay for two.
Legacy of Dead free spins: trigger, expanding symbols and retriggers
Three or more Tomb symbols anywhere on the reels trigger the bonus. Here is the sequence in order:
- The Tombs pay their scatter win: three pay 2x the total bet, four pay 20x and five pay 200x.
- You receive 8 free spins.
- A random regular symbol is chosen as the special expanding symbol.
- During the spins, whenever that symbol lands in enough positions to form a win, it grows to fill its entire reel and pays across all active lines, whether or not the reels involved are adjacent.
- Three or more Tombs during the round award 8 more free spins and add another expanding symbol.
That last step is what separates Legacy of Dead from older book-style games. Each retrigger adds a second, third or later expanding symbol, up to 9 in total. With several symbols expanding at once, a single spin can pay on multiple symbols across all ten lines.
Why gaps do not matter
The expanding symbol pays "with gaps allowed". If it lands on reels 1, 3 and 5, it still counts as three of a kind on every active line once it expands. That is why a modest-looking spin in the bonus can return far more than the same symbols would in the base game.
What a full screen of expanding symbols pays
Because the expanding symbol pays on all 10 lines at once, each symbol's line value is effectively multiplied by ten. The table shows what one expanding symbol covering all five reels returns, measured against the total bet with 10 lines active.
| Expanding symbol | 5 of a kind (line bet) | On all 10 lines (total bet) |
|---|---|---|
| Blue pharaoh | 5,000x | 5,000x |
| Anubis | 1,600x | 1,600x |
| Gold pharaoh or Horus | 600x | 600x |
| A or K | 120x | 120x |
| Q, J or 10 | 80x | 80x |
The line-bet and total-bet columns match because 10 lines x the line bet equals the total bet. A full screen of the blue pharaoh therefore lands exactly on the game's 5,000x ceiling, which explains where the top figure comes from. These are paytable values, not probabilities. Five-reel expanding wins on the top symbols are rare, and most free spins rounds are made of smaller hits on card ranks.
A partial expansion, worked through
Full screens are the exception, so it is more useful to see a typical case. Say Anubis is the expanding symbol and lands on reels 1, 2 and 4 during a free spin at a C$1 total bet (C$0.10 per line). It expands on those three reels and counts as three of a kind on all 10 lines, gap included: 30x the line bet, or C$3, per line, which is C$30 in total. The same three Anubis symbols scattered in the base game would usually pay nothing at all, because they would not sit on a single line from the left.
The Tomb symbol and its double role
The Tomb does two jobs. As a wild, it substitutes for other symbols on a payline, and five of them on a line pay 5,000x the line bet, the same as the blue pharaoh. As a scatter, it pays anywhere on the screen based on the total bet and triggers the bonus round.
That double role matters in practice. A Tomb that lands mid-reel during the base game can complete a line win for a character symbol, while three scattered Tombs open the free spins regardless of the lines. During the bonus, three or more Tombs are also what retrigger the round and bring in the next expanding symbol. There is no bonus buy in Legacy of Dead, so the Tomb is the only way into the feature.
RTP, volatility and the 5,000x max win in C$
Play'n GO's own game-help page lists the RTP of Legacy of Dead as 96.58%. Treat it as an average over a vast number of spins: about C$96.58 of every C$100 staked comes back, and the rest is the house edge. Play'n GO games can run at lower RTP settings at some casinos, and those versions are not published, so open the game's help or info screen where you play and check the figure shown there.
Volatility
Play'n GO does not publish a volatility rating for this slot, so we do not assign one. What the maths shows is where the value sits: the base game pays from a 10-line grid with no multipliers, while the largest outcomes all depend on expanding symbols in free spins. Expect long stretches of small or no wins between features. Our RTP and volatility guide explains how to read this kind of design.
The ceiling in dollars
| Total bet (10 lines) | 5,000x maximum win |
|---|---|
| C$0.10 | C$500 |
| C$1 | C$5,000 |
| C$5 | C$25,000 |
| C$10 | C$50,000 |
Stake sizing
No strategy changes the RTP or when the Tombs land. What helps is a stake small enough to ride out dry spells: if your session budget is C$100, a C$0.50 spin gives you about 200 spins before the budget is gone, against 100 at C$1. Decide in advance how much you are prepared to lose and how long you will play, then hold to both. Slots are entertainment with a built-in house edge, not a way to earn money.

The gamble feature: what it does and does not change
A win can be staked again on a card guess. Guess the colour correctly and the win doubles; guess the suit and it quadruples. Guess wrong and the win is gone. Up to five gambles in a row are allowed, with a cap of 2,500 coins.
According to the help file, using the gamble leaves the RTP unchanged. In plain terms, it is a fair bet on its own: it does not cost you anything in expected value, but it does make results more extreme, turning small wins into nothing or into much larger amounts. If you prefer steadier sessions, ignore it. If you use it, decide in advance which wins you will gamble rather than deciding in the moment.
A quick example shows what "no change to RTP" means. Gamble a C$2 win on colour and it becomes either C$4 or nothing; on average across many tries it stays worth C$2. Choose the suit and the result is C$8 or nothing, again averaging out at the same C$2. The average is untouched, but each single result becomes far more all-or-nothing.
Legacy of Dead slot demo and free play
The Legacy of Dead slot demo on this page is Play'n GO's official practice mode. It runs the same reels, paytable, free spins and gamble feature as the real game, with a play-money balance labelled DEMO rather than Canadian dollars. Legacy of Dead slot free play is the obvious way to see how often the Tombs land and how a round with two or three expanding symbols actually looks.
Treat it as a test of fit rather than a forecast. Even several hundred practice spins cannot reveal the real RTP, and the demo cannot tell you which RTP version a casino runs. It can tell you whether you enjoy waiting for the feature on a 10-line grid, which bet size feels comfortable, and whether the gamble button is something you want in your sessions. Since this Legacy of Dead free slot version needs no sign-up, there is no cost to finding out.
Legacy of Dead online casinos in Canada
Play'n GO games are widely carried, but choosing where to play Legacy of Dead slot for real money starts with your province. Ontario has its own regulated market: casinos operate under iGaming Ontario and are registered with the AGCO. Alberta followed on 13 July 2026, with operators registered with AGLC. In the other provinces, a provincially run site is the regulated option, while offshore-licensed casinos that take Canadian players are not overseen by the provinces.
When you compare Legacy of Dead casinos, look past the welcome banner:
- Is the licence stated clearly, and does it cover your province?
- Which RTP does the game's help screen show at that casino?
- Can you deposit and withdraw in Canadian dollars?
- Are deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion easy to find?
Any casino Legacy of Dead appears at must check your age: the threshold is 19, dropping to 18 for residents of Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. See our guide to playing in Canada for provincial details.
Legacy of Dead vs Book of Dead: what changed in the bonus
Book of Dead is the obvious comparison: same studio, same grid, same Tomb-style scatter and the same 5,000x cap. The differences are all in the bonus round.
| Legacy of Dead | Book of Dead | |
|---|---|---|
| Released | January 2020 | January 2016 |
| Published RTP | 96.58% | 96.21% |
| Free spins on trigger | 8 | 10 |
| Retrigger | +8 spins and an extra expanding symbol | +10 spins |
| Expanding symbols | Up to 9 | 1 |
| Max win | 5,000x | 5,000x |
Legacy of Dead trades two spins at the start for a round that can grow in power with each retrigger, and it carries the higher published RTP of the two. Book of Dead gives more spins up front but sticks with one expanding symbol. For a different take on ancient Egypt, Le Pharaoh uses a 6x5 grid with 19 paylines, and Valley of the Gods unlocks positions on a 5x5 grid. All of them are in our slot catalog.
Who Legacy of Dead suits
This is a slot for players who are happy to wait for one feature and judge the session by it. If you enjoy the anticipation of three Tombs and the hope of a retrigger that brings a second or third expanding symbol, it delivers that better than its older sibling. If you want something happening on every spin, such as cascades, multipliers or a bonus buy, look elsewhere in the catalogue, because the base game here is deliberately bare.

What works and what does not
Pros
- Each retrigger adds another expanding symbol, up to 9, so the round can grow stronger
- 96.58% RTP on the provider's help page, higher than Book of Dead's 96.21%
- Expanding symbols pay with gaps allowed on all 10 lines
- Simple 5x3, 10-line layout that is easy to follow
- Optional gamble feature that does not change the RTP
Cons
- Only 8 free spins per trigger, two fewer than Book of Dead
- The base game has no multipliers or extra features, so quiet stretches are common
- No bonus buy: the Tomb is the only way into free spins
- The demo runs in play currency, not Canadian dollars
How the feature works
Three or more Tombs anywhere award 8 free spins and pay a scatter win of 2x, 20x or 200x the total bet. A random regular symbol becomes the special expanding symbol: when it lands in a winning position it expands to cover its reel and pays on all active lines, with gaps between reels allowed. Each retrigger, again from three or more Tombs, brings 8 extra spins and one more expanding symbol, to a maximum of 9. The round cannot be bought.
