Buffalo King Megaways: the short verdict
Buffalo King Megaways is a straight, high-volatility Megaways slot with one feature that matters: free spins where wild multipliers add up across a whole tumble sequence and retriggers have no limit. The provider publishes a 96.52% RTP and a 5,000x ceiling. The base game is often quiet, so it suits patient players with a budget built for long dry spells. Try it in the demo before you stake real money.

Buffalo King Megaways is Pragmatic Play's 2021 remake of its buffalo-themed slot, rebuilt on the Megaways engine licensed from Big Time Gaming. Every spin changes the height of each reel, so the number of ways to win shifts from spin to spin, up to a maximum of 200,704. Wins tumble away and new symbols drop in, and the free spins round adds wild multipliers that grow as they land.
This review explains the reel layout, how the free spins and multipliers work, what the 96.52% RTP and high volatility mean in practice, how the ante bet and bonus buy change the cost of a spin, and how to play it legally in Canada. The free demo above runs in Canadian dollars with play money, so you can test every feature before you spend anything.
How Buffalo King Megaways reaches 200,704 ways
The grid has six reels. Reels 1 and 6 show up to 7 symbols each. Reels 2 to 5 show up to 8 symbols, and part of that height comes from a horizontal reel that runs along the top of those four columns. Each spin, every reel lands at a random height, so the number of ways changes from spin to spin, up to the full count.
The maximum is simple multiplication: 7 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 7 = 200,704. Wins come from matching symbols on adjacent reels, counted from the left, in any row: three or more for most symbols, two for the buffalo. The more symbols each reel shows, the more combinations those matches can form, which is why tall spins feel busier.
Tumbles in the base game
After any win, the winning symbols vanish, the ones above fall into the gaps and new symbols drop in from the top. If that forms a new win, it pays and tumbles again. A single paid spin can turn into a chain of small wins, and the chain only stops when no new combination appears. In the base game the wild, a canyon symbol, appears on reels 2 to 5 only and substitutes for every symbol except the bonus.
The symbols that carry the game
The buffalo is the top symbol by a wide margin: six on adjacent reels pay 20x the total bet, and it is the only symbol that pays for just two in a row (1x). The eagle and cougar follow, then the wolf and moose, then the card royals. With so many ways on screen, several of these small wins often combine into one larger total.
Free spins and wild multipliers
The feature is triggered by bonus symbols. Land four or more and they pay first, then award free spins:
| Bonus symbols | Instant pay | Free spins |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 5x total bet | 12 |
| 5 | 20x total bet | 17 |
| 6 | 100x total bet | 22 |
During free spins, every wild that lands carries a multiplier of 2x, 3x or 5x. Wild multipliers that take part in wins are added together into one multiplier that applies to the whole tumble sequence. So if a 3x wild and a 5x wild both help form wins within one chain of tumbles, that sequence is multiplied by 8x, not 15x. Additive maths keeps single hits modest, but a long tumble with several wilds can still build a large figure.
Retriggers without a ceiling
Three or more bonus symbols during free spins add 5 more spins, and there is no limit on how often this can happen. That is where the slot's long tail comes from: a round that keeps retriggering gives the wild multipliers more chances to line up with a big tumble chain. Most rounds, of course, end without a retrigger.
RTP, high volatility and the 5,000x max win in C$
Pragmatic Play publishes a return to player of 96.52% for the standard game, 96.49% with the ante bet and 96.50% when you buy free spins. Over a very long run, C$100 staked on the standard game returns about C$96.52 to players on average, with the rest kept as the house edge. That figure tells you nothing reliable about a single session, and casinos can run versions configured with a lower RTP, so check the game's info screen where you play. Our RTP and volatility guide explains the difference between these two numbers.
Volatility is rated high. In practice that means many spins with no win or a small one, and most of the value packed into the free spins round. A short session can easily end well below where it started.
What 5,000x looks like at different stakes
The maximum win is 5,000x the stake. Here is the arithmetic for base bets inside the demo's range:
| Base bet | Max win at 5,000x |
|---|---|
| C$0.20 | C$1,000 |
| C$1 | C$5,000 |
| C$5 | C$25,000 |
| C$20 | C$100,000 |
| C$240 | C$1,200,000 |
These are ceilings, not targets. Reaching 5,000x needs a rare combination of a long retriggered round and stacked wild multipliers, and the vast majority of sessions never come close.
Ante bet or bonus buy: two ways to change the spin
Buffalo King Megaways gives you two optional settings. You can use one or the other, not both, because switching on the ante bet disables the buy.
- Ante bet: raises each spin to 1.25x the stake and doubles the chance of triggering free spins naturally. A C$1 bet becomes C$1.25 per spin. RTP with the ante is listed at 96.49%.
- Bonus buy: pays 100x the stake to go straight into free spins. At C$1 that is C$100 for one round; at C$0.20 it is C$20. RTP for the buy is listed at 96.50%.
The RTP gaps between the three modes are tiny, so neither option is a shortcut to better returns. What they change is how fast you spend. A bought round can pay back less than its cost, and often does, which is why a C$100 buy should be treated as one large bet, not a guaranteed feature win. Not every casino build includes the buy button, as some markets switch it off, so check the version you are playing.
When the ante bet makes sense
The ante suits players who mainly play for the free spins and are comfortable paying 25% more per spin for twice the natural trigger chance. If you prefer longer sessions on a fixed budget, leaving it off keeps your cost per spin lower.
Play Buffalo King Megaways slot free in the demo
The demo on this page is Pragmatic Play's own version, running in Canadian dollars with a play balance. It uses the same reels, paytable and features as the real-money game, from the shifting reel heights to the wild multipliers in free spins. To play Buffalo King Megaways free, load the demo and start spinning. Nothing is staked and nothing can be withdrawn.
A few things worth checking while you play the free version:
- Open the info screen and read the paytable at your chosen stake, so you know what each symbol is worth in C$.
- Note how many spins pass between free spins triggers. With high volatility, long gaps are normal.
- Try the ante bet for a stretch and compare how quickly the play balance falls.
- If the buy button appears in your build, try it a few times to see how varied the payouts of a bought round are.
Treat what you see as a feel for the game, not a forecast. A handful of demo bonus rounds is far too small a sample to judge the slot's real return.

Buffalo King Megaways casino play in Canada
Where you can play Buffalo King Megaways for real money depends on your province. In Ontario, private casinos registered with the AGCO and operating through iGaming Ontario can offer Pragmatic Play titles to players located in the province, and Alberta has had a similar regulated market, under AGLC, since 13 July 2026. Elsewhere, each province runs its own government online casino, and many players also use offshore-licensed sites that are not regulated by a Canadian province.
The legal age is 19+ in most provinces and 18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. When you choose a casino, look beyond the welcome offer:
- A visible licence and the regulator's name in the site footer.
- Pragmatic Play listed among its suppliers, with this game in the lobby.
- Payment methods common in Canada, with clear withdrawal times.
- Deposit limits, session reminders and self-exclusion in the account settings.
Our page on playing in Canada covers the provincial rules in more detail, and the full slot catalog lists every game we cover.
Budgeting for the Buffalo King Megaways slot machine
No betting pattern changes the RTP of a slot machine, Megaways or not. The part you do control is the size of each stake and the point where you walk away. With a high-volatility game like this one, that control matters more than usual.
- Use a small stake relative to your budget. A common rule of thumb is to budget for at least 200 spins; on a C$100 budget that points to C$0.50 a spin or less.
- Expect long gaps. Free spins can take hundreds of spins to arrive. Plan for that instead of raising the stake to force them.
- Decide on the ante before you start. Switching it on and off mid-session tends to blur how much you have actually spent.
- Treat a bonus buy as a single bet. If 100x your stake is more than you would happily lose in one go, skip it.
- Set a stop point for wins as well as losses. Leaving after a good round is the only way to keep it.
Slots are paid entertainment with a house edge. If a session stops being fun, stop playing and use your casino's limit tools.
Who this slot suits, and who should skip it
Within Pragmatic Play's catalogue, Buffalo King Megaways slots in between the gentle, frequent-win games and the extreme high-ceiling releases. It is built around one big moment, the free spins round, and asks you to sit through a quieter base game to reach it.
It is a good match if you:
- enjoy Megaways reels and the variety that changing reel heights bring to every spin;
- prefer a single, easy-to-follow feature over menus of modes and side games;
- have a session budget large enough to absorb long gaps between features.
It is a weaker match if you want steady small wins to keep a short session going, or if you are chasing the very largest multipliers, where several newer games in our catalog publish ceilings well above 5,000x. Either way, try the demo first and only play for real money with an amount you are comfortable losing.
How it compares with other ways slots and Pragmatic favourites
If you like the Megaways format, the closest sibling in our list is The Dog House Megaways, also by Pragmatic Play. It has fewer maximum ways but a higher ceiling, and lets you choose between sticky and raining wilds in its free spins. Elvis Frog TRUEWAYS from BGaming uses a similar shifting-reels idea with wild multipliers that add up in free spins, plus a coin respin feature.
| Game | Ways | Volatility | Max win | RTP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buffalo King Megaways | Up to 200,704 | High | 5,000x | 96.52% |
| The Dog House Megaways | Up to 117,649 | Medium | 12,000x | 96.55% |
| Elvis Frog TRUEWAYS | Up to 262,144 | Very high | 5,000x | 96.70% |
| Temple Tumble | Up to 46,656 | High | Not published | 96.25% |
For an animal theme on a classic grid, Wolf Gold keeps things simple with 25 paylines and a money respin with jackpots. And if you want Pragmatic's tumble mechanic without reel heights changing, Gates of Olympus pays symbols anywhere on a fixed 6x5 grid.

What works and what does not
Pros
- Up to 200,704 ways, with reel heights that change every spin
- Wild multipliers of 2x-5x add up across a whole tumble sequence in free spins
- Unlimited retriggers of 5 extra spins keep big rounds alive
- Bonus symbols pay up to 100x on their own before the spins begin
- Published RTP of 96.52%, with ante and buy versions almost identical
Cons
- High volatility means long stretches without a feature
- 5,000x max win is lower than many newer Pragmatic releases
- Wild multipliers add rather than multiply, which caps single hits
- A 100x bonus buy can easily pay back less than its cost
How the feature works
Free spins start when 4, 5 or 6 bonus symbols land anywhere. They first pay 5x, 20x or 100x the total bet, then award 12, 17 or 22 free spins. In free spins every wild carries a 2x, 3x or 5x multiplier; the multipliers of wilds in wins are added together and applied to the whole tumble sequence. Three or more bonus symbols during the round add 5 spins, with no limit on retriggers. The ante bet doubles the trigger chance; the bonus buy costs 100x.
